At the Windows 10 press event held yesterday, Microsoft announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch. But what about Windows RT based devices like Surface RT and Surface RT 2? During a Q&A session after the event, Microsoft said that it is “working on an update for Windows RT as well.” But, Windows RT devices will only have some of the functionality of Windows 10.
“Surface Pro 3 (and the entire Surface Pro lineup) will update to Windows 10. We are working on an update for [the Windows RT version of] Surface, which will have some of the functionality of Windows 10. More information to come,” said Microsoft in a statement to CNET.
Talking about Windows 10 upgrade for Lumia devices, Chris Weber pointed out that not every device will be able to upgrade to Windows 10.
Weâre making it as easy as possible to get Windows 10. Windows 10 has been designed to run well on todayâs Lumia phones. Like any upgrade to a new operating system, not every phone will upgrade or support all possible Windows 10 features, and certain features and experiences will require more advanced future hardware.
I’m sure Surface RT or Surface 2 owners will be disappointed to hear this news from Microsoft. I hope Microsoft clarifies more about the upgrade path to Windows 10 for Windows RT users.
