Microsoft Azure Traffic Manager allows you to control the distribution of user traffic for service endpoints in different datacenters. Service endpoints supported by Traffic Manager include Azure VMs, Web Apps, and cloud services. You can also use Traffic Manager with external, non-Azure endpoints. Microsoft yesterday announced the general availability of Geographic Routing feature in Azure Traffic Manager. With this new capability, you can now direct user traffic to specific endpoints based on the geographic location from where the requests originate. Since Azure has datacenters in various regions in the world, you can route your traffic to required locations. This feature will be useful in the scenarios such as:
- Customizing and localizing content for specific regions, enabling better user experience and engagement. As an example, an e-commerce site can localize the site content and merchandise items to users in a specific region.
- Knowing where the users are coming from makes it easier to implement mandates related to data sovereignty.
This feature is available in all Azure Public cloud regions and will be available in Azure Government, Azure Germany, and Azure China in May 2017. Geographic Routing will cost the same as with all other routing methods.
