Apple’s delayed Mac Pro leaves room for a modular Surface Studio

Apple’s new Mac Pro is coming out later than planned, the company revealed in an interview given to TechCrunch yesterday.

“We want to be transparent and communicate openly with our pro community, so we want them to know that the Mac Pro is a 2019 product. It’s not something for this year,” said Apple’s VPs.

The Mac Pro had been promised to debut in 201, and it’s being pushed back is something of an outlier for the normally conservative Apple, which had made something of a reputation on being prompt to release devices that appealed to professionals.

While Apple’s Mac Pro has long since the desired device for a certain cadre of creatives, but the firm’s reticence to release updates of any sort now it may be giving Microsoft an edge it could capitalise on (no pun intended.)

Microsoft has made a Surface Laptop, Tablet, and Studio (phone as well, if Lumia is included), but the firm has yet to extend itself into the world of modular desktop devices.

While the Surface Book or Surface Book 2 could somewhat serve this market, when paired with the relevant accessories, it would be interesting to see what Microsoft did if it went all in.

Imagine a Surface-branded Mac Pro like device, running Windows 10, with all your favourite apps and links to all your smartphones, isolated from the lock-in provided by Apple.

Sadly, all we can do for now is imagine. Microsoft is missing an opportunity here, and we do hope the firm eventually takes advantage.
