App Review: Official London 2012 Olympics app

The Olympic games started a few days ago, and what is the most important thing to have on your smartphone then? An app for the Olympic games of course!

I have searched the marketplace for a good one, and was really disappointed: There were only very few apps, and none of them had a rating higher than 3 stars. But then I found there is a official application, which I found surprising good. Even the official app does have a rating of only 3 stars (in Germany), which I can’t support, because I personally think the application is better than that. Let’s take a look at it…

The application is very functionally. You can have a live score, choose a sport, take a look on the calendar and set favorites.

In the live score view you see the actual score of the games which are in the run right now, if you choose a sport manually you are able to see its events, news, photos and information.

The calendar view shows all events on the date you chose, for example it tells you there is a hockey match on the 3rd August. If you want to see more details about hockey you just need to press it, and then you can see who plays when or the results if the game is already over.

If you set a sport as favorite you will get a fast access to it.

I have to admit I do not watch the Olympic games, but that does not mean I am not interested into the results! I am, and the official app makes it much easier for me. Not only because it is very functional, but also because the UI is fast and fluid.

There are some disappointments, like the stats of the athletes are not shown correctly and at times the results can be delayed. For me it is not big deal, but I think those people out there who are really interested into the Olympic games will find this annoying.

In short words: For people like me, who are interested in the results but not a real fan of the Olympic games and do not need information about the athletes, the official application will be more than enough, but for those whom the Olympic games are important this application is just not enough – and the worst part: There are no better applications out there.

The official London 2012 app can be found for free in the Marketplace.
