App Review: Homework Manager

Homework Manager is a homework planner app for Windows Phone 7, but it lacks a free trial. Is it worth your money?

The short answer is: No, don’t buy this app. My Study Life is far better. Homework Manager has potential, but it fails because of some simple mistakes. Maybe if the developer updates his app, I will recommend Homework Manager, but as of now, it is quite frustrating trying to use the app to plan your homework.

The app is pretty fast and fluid, but it fails at the most important thing: Telling you when your homework is due. Instead of the app simply telling you, “Math is due on Monday”, it says “Math is due in 2 days and 23 hours”. That format is ridiculous, since no one can look at that time reference and calculate what day the assignment is actually due on without taking time to think about it!

When entering homework assignments, you are also required to enter a time (in addition to the date) that the assignment is due. Filling in the hour and minute an assignment is due is one of the most useless things, since most students only care what day the assignment is due (they typically know when their class is!). That time field becomes extremely annoying and takes extra work to fill it in each time when adding an assignment.

Overall, with a little work, this app could be great. However, sqrcodeince it uses a ridiculous system of telling the user when things are due, the app isn’t even functional for students. Until the developer fixes the app, use something like My Study Life in the meantime.
