An Interview with WP7 Developer Mark Monster

1)Have you developed Apps for any other platforms before? If Yes What are they?

In my professional I develop applications based on .NET. Only once I created a Windows Mobile 6.1 application (http://mydea.mymonster.nl)

2)Why did you choose WP7 as a platform of your choice?

My customer asked me to develop an application for specifically on the Windows Phone 7. He just heard that the new mobile phone platform was launched as CTP, for all other platforms my customer has similar applications. To me creating applications for Windows Phone 7 made a lot of sense. I’m already experienced on Silverlight and could very easily reuse my knowledge while developing for Windows Phone 7. The things that always were so difficult on the Windows Mobile 6.x platform, the UI, was now almost easy.

3)Which one do you think as the single most feature you liked in WP7?

I really like the concept of a connected experience in the different hubs specially the People hub.

4)Are you satisfied with WP7 Platform development tools?

I’m satisfied, at least, now I’m satisfied. During my development, first the CTP, later the Beta I had to deal with a not yet complete development experience. But what’s to expect from CTP/Beta versions of software? Although nog everything was ready the system already was pretty stable, never experienced hard crashed of my app that weren’t my own code faults. When we now take a look at the Development tools we see a very complete set: Emulator, Visual Studio, Expression Blend, a lot of controls from the Silverlight for Windows Phone Toolkit (http://silverlight.codeplex.com)

5)What are the Apps you are developing now in WP7?Details on the Apps

I completed two apps, both around weather, including rain forecast radar and satellite images for The Netherlands and Europe (), and a similar app that includes Germany and Europe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpR0wRa7QqU).

6)In what way Microsoft can improve their WP7 or What does WP7 lacks from?

As I explained before the experience is already pretty complete. But I think it would be good if developers could write apps that integrate well with the Live Id that’s connected to the Windows Phone currently there’s no API that I’m aware of to use the phone owner’s Live Id.

7)Future Plans of you?

I’m planning to create more applications for Windows Phone 7. Some will be customers other are just from my own ideas. There have been a lot of demo’s for different applications, but have you seen for example a demo of a Wikipedia app? I haven’t so far.

I’d like to share with everyone: Please test your final app on a physical phone: I’ve had the chance to test my apps on a phone and I experienced quite some bugs in my code in how I handled Tombstoning situations.

Thanks Mark for sharing with us.
