An Interview with NewDay for WP7 developer Peter Lum

1)Have you developed Apps for any other platforms before? If Yes What are they?

Yes, NewDay started out as an pet project in 2002. It was written in Java2ME for the Nokia series 60 and 40. It won the top prize in Nokia Mobile Application Contest in 2004 under the Personal Productivity category. Since then, NewDay is available for Apple iPhone/iPad, Java2ME as well as Windows Phone 7.

Other apps we have developed include ‘Vitamins A to Z for successful trading’ for iPhone and others, including an iPhone App for the local bank.

2)Why did you choose WP7 as a platform of your choice?

We were developing ‘proof-of-concept’ enterprise apps for Windows Mobile 6.x and found that the platform was clunky and outdated and the native UI not as attractive as other platforms such as the iPhone. When we saw Windows Phone 7, we were pleasantly surprised at the completely new interface and strategy.

Both Visual Studio 2010 and Expression Blend are great tools. We especially like the fact that we can easily create animations (without coding) using storyboards in Expression Blend and use it directly in Visual Studio 2010.

We think this is fantastic and will definitely allocate more resources to develop for Windows Phone 7 now.

3)Which one do you think as the single most feature you liked in WP7?

Compared to Windows Mobile 6.x, Windows Phone 7 is a wish-come-true. Coding is much faster and easier. Combining XAML and C# and developing on Silverlight that runs on WP7 is a great idea!

We think the 2 new controls, Pivot and Panorama controls, combined with Expressions storyboards, are the best features in WP7.

4)Are you satisfied with WP7 Platform development tools?

Extremely. Both Visual Studio 2010 and Expression Blend works as expected and more. Intellisense in Visual Studio and Storyboards in Expressions are the features we appreciate the most.

5)What are the Apps you are developing now in WP7?Details on the Apps?

We just finished NewDay for Windows Phone 7. (More details in

6)In what way Microsoft can improve their WP7 or What does WP7 lacks from?

WP7 could use a database like SQLite for apps that require lots of data.

7)Future Plans of you?

Will consider porting other Apps we developed to Windows Phone 7. At the same time, we will also start promoting WP7 as a viable platform to clients.
