After Apple, Samsung gets slapped with a $5.7 million fine for slowing down phones

Earlier this year we saw Apple get tangled into a controversy which ended with multiple lawsuits against the company. This was the result of Apple admitting that they slow down old iPhones with updates and gave a decent reason for their actions.

Following the media and consumer backlash, Apple released an update that allowed users to opt-out of the throttling feature. Now it looks like Apple wasn’t the only company throttling the old devices. Samsung has been slapped with a $5.7 million fine for throttling its old devices. Samsung was charged after the investigation which revealed that the updates for smartphones “caused serious dysfunctions and reduced performance significantly, thereby accelerating the process of replacing them.” The investigation also concluded that both Apple and Samsung failed to provide enough information to the users about the updates including an option to opt-out if they wanted to.

Samsung, on the other hand, hasn’t released an official statement yet but we do hope to hear how they will overcome the problem especially considering that they denied the allegations earlier.
