Ad-supported app does better than for-pay app in Marketplace

With Marketplace sales data finally available to developers, all kinds of insights are turning up.

Developer Roger Peters from Smartypantscoding has tweeted that his simple, ad-supported game is earning him more in one day than his more complex game, Hungry Castaway, has earned in its whole lifetime.

He notes that the app benefited in two ways from being free – one because users are more likely to try a free application, and also because the free section of marketplace is much more trafficked.

While we do not know if this experience will be universal, we know Rovio is doing very well with free Angry Birds on Android, and will likely make much more over the life time of the game from the ads in these apps than from the $0.99 the much smaller audience of paying users would have earned.
