9 Windows Phone 7 handsets coming this year?

Speaking to BizIT, Dan Novak, Qualcomm’s vice-president of global marketing may have let slip exactly how many new Windows Phone 7 handsets we can expect this year.

Talking about the increasing dominance of Qualcomm’s chipsets he noted:

‘We’ve launched five times as many Android devices as our next competitor,’ he said, adding that the upcoming nine Windows Phone 7 devices will also be based on Snapdragon.

The main new information is of course the number, as we already knew the next generation of devices will be based on Qualcomm’s chipsets, as revealed at MIX11, with Qualcomm’s MSM7x30 featuring Adreno 205 GPU specifically noted.

If 9 devices are to be released towards the end of this year, it would represent a reduction compared to the year before, when 10 devices were announced at launch. In 2012 however Nokia is rumoured to be planning to release more than a dozen new devices, making the reduction no more than temporary.
