Lawrence Gripper’s popular and polished BBC News Mobile app has been removed from the Windows Phone Store since the end of March, and Lawrence is now in the process of discontinuing the service the Windows Phone 7.x relies on for its Live Tile.
As part of the process Windows Phone 7 users will receive the message (right) on their Live Tile informing them the service will be discontinued, and Lawrence advises users to unpin the tile to prevent wasting data.
The Windows Phone 8 version of the app generates the Live Tile locally, and should in theory be able to continue working without further support.
Lawrence has not spoken about the reasons for the app being removed from the store, but it is likely related to the use of BBC’s trademarks. Unfortunately this is in the context of great reluctance by the BBC to serve Windows Phone users, which does leave the moral argument rather on Gripper’s side.
