Microsoft’s [email protected] initiative has been a striving force in providing Xbox gamers with high-profile indies that may not have gotten the chance to release on the Xbox One platform. Today, [email protected] marks its 1000th published game.

It’s been five years and over a billion US dollars, but [email protected] has finally hit this huge milestone. Through the program, over 3000 developers now have access to Xbox One developer kits and are able to bring their games to Xbox One gamers.

Speaking to Eurogamer, [email protected] boss Chris Charla said, “We’re getting closer and closer to the point where the only gating factor in the success of a video game is the vision of the creator and the willingness to make that happen. It’s no longer that the gates are platform access or technology in terms of being able to create a game engine. To me, that’s awesome, because it means that we’re seeing more and more new voices emerge, and we’re seeing more and more stories from people we’ve never heard from before. That’s what excites me so much about the independent scene right now.”

If it wasn’t for [email protected], we wouldn’t have seen the fantastic success of Studio MDHR’s Cuphead. Even Digital Extreme’s Warframe was published under the program, a hugely popular MMO on Xbox.
