AAWP has announced, by their own tracking, that there are now over 82,234 in Marketplace, increasing by 10,228 in the last month or 340 apps per day.

They note while there have been accusations that Marketplace is deteriorating in quality, 8% of apps are still scored at 5 stars, and this number has been stable over the last few months.

It is now comfortably the third biggest mobile app ecosystem, behind Android (450,000+) and iOS (550,000+), but some way ahead of Blackberry (70,000) and Symbian (70,000).

Not all apps are available, and not all apps are available everywhere.  USA is the biggest marketplace, with 69,123 apps, while China, one of the newest markets, only has 21,530.

At the current rate the 100,000 milestone will be reached in late May, earlier than the June date earlier predicted.
