If the above headline made no sense to you (why would you need to navigate when you are standing still?) then you are probably not in the market for appreciating this significant event. However if you are in the habit of traipsing thought forests trying to find hidden treasure you would be jumping for joy now.

Deactivating Static navigation is essential for use with the geocaching sport, where people compete to find caches of random objects. Normally GPS devices are optimized for driving, meaning they reject small slow movements, which are exactly the movements a geocacher would use when narrowing in on a location.

The Kaiser was thought not to have the ability to deactivate static navigation, but recently a poster at XDA-Developers came up with a registry hack which make it all happen.

Open your favourite registry editor, and search for

HKLM\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS\GPSMode

Mine was set to “2”, and I got the bad behavior when slowly walking or geocaching.
Switching it to “1” led the GPSr to send each position without modifications or smoothing directly to the internal com port: Perfect! Now my Kaiser can really replace the old Wizard with external SirfIII-GPS!

The result appears to be mixed – some report the hack fixed all the problems they ever had, but others say it has had little effect. Seeing how its only a small registry edit it certainly sounds worth the effort finding out.
